Elevator Safety

elevator Once we finally got to our destination, things seemed to calm down. We love the people-watching that vacation time brings. The opportunities are unlimited, although typically most vacationers seem to be a jovial bunch because, after all, they are on vacation. One morning though, we were eating breakfast at the hotel when we noticed a very unhappy looking couple and their two children eating at the next table. The woman appeared to have a permanent scowl on her face. The husband was doing his best to ogle the female staff and avoid her and the two kids.

After we finished breakfast, we went to the elevator and as the door opened, “Scowl Woman” came out with her family, dragging one kid by the ear. Something was up, she was even unhappier than she seemed at breakfast. It soon became clear why the escalating scowl.

Rick and I are innocently in the elevator when all of a sudden we heard a voice squawking out of an intercom-

Voice in elevator: “Is everything all right?”

Me, puzzled looking at Rick: “What’s going on?”

Voice in elevator, more insistent: “Is everything ALL RIGHT? Are you stuck in the elevator?”

Me, realizing that scowly woman’s kid hit the emergency button: “Oh, we are fine! Some kid pushed the emergency button.”

Voice in elevator: “PLEASE RESPOND. Is there an emergency?, do you need assistance?”

Me, shouting: “WE ARE FINE. WE DO NOT NEED HELP.”

I then realized that they can’t hear us. You have to push a button to reply!

Good thing this system is designed to handle only those who can reach some button!?!

Luckily I am a SUPER SMART PERSON, I found the button (which had me crouching on the floor to reach) and assured them that all was well.

A SNARKY voice said : THANK YOU for responding!

I must have missed the elevator emergency training in my welcome session.
