Green Bin Trick

4 08 2008

green bin tips Our community has recently adopted green bins to manage compostable waste. They will take anything that can be composted but also meat, dairy, paper towels etc. We have always composted but since we moved back to the “city”, it is not as desirable because of the critters it encourages and the potential for smell.

Yesterday I went into the garage to place something into the green bin and when I opened the lid, OH MY GOD, it was undulating with maggots. BLECH!!.

I screamed. Rick thought I must have seen a rat in the garage (although he didn’t come out to save me, just looked questioningly at me when I ran into the house). I donned the stem to stern maggot suit (OK, it was really just long, rubber gloves) and dragged the green bin onto the front lawn into the sun and plotted my next tactic. I decided to pour salt into the bin and it seemed to do the trick! They dropped in and just withered away!

Later that day, I moved a garbage bag in the garage and For Pete’s Sake, it was undulating with maggots too.

Sometimes summer can be a real hassle.

At least this time, I knew what to do……
